Mark ‘Spoonman’ Petrakis and I are experimenting with new interactive storytelling ideas, starting with ‘Ubu’s Dreams’, a shadow puppet show.

In this design session, we reviewed our first scripts together and brainstormed ideas for moving puppets and props around the stage with technology support. We would like to create big heads that can express feelings by moving their eyes and mouths independently.

I showed Mark some of my head paintings, where we can see what the characters are thinking, with visual symbols of what’s on their minds. They illustrate how we fail to communicate by projecting different mental images on the same physical objects — one of human nature’s most vexing challenges.

We plan to perform our first show during our Dada exhibit this fall at the Canessa Gallery in North Beach. I think we’re on the right track, but still have lots to do. Wish us luck!
